Background and editing

The source asks for a white background. The rules do not allow digital changes to the photo, so the background has to be right when the photo is taken. Retake it against a plain wall instead of editing the background. PortraitPass keeps background replacement off by default for this document.

Rules from the source

  • Taken within six months before you apply, front view, no hat.
  • Dark, busy or patterned backgrounds are not accepted.
  • Photos that are digitally modified are not accepted.
  • Write your full name and date of birth on the back.
  • Head height 32-36 mm where an embassy states it; not every embassy does.

Expression, lighting and how recent the photo is cannot be measured from a picture, so check them yourself.

Can you make it at home?

Yes. Size depends on the embassy: most say 45 x 35 mm (35 wide, 45 high), the Embassy in India says 45 x 45 mm, and US consulates also take 2 x 2 in. Check the one handling your application.

PortraitPass frames the photo against the head and eye lines above and exports a single photo or a print sheet, with the measurements shown so you can check them yourself.
