We check sizes and positions; the issuing authority decides acceptance. Last checked 28 Sep 2026. Rules change. Check the issuing authority’s current instructions before you apply.

Background and editing

The source asks for a white background. The source does not say whether the background may be edited. The safest route is a plain wall at capture. If you replace a background, check the receiving organization’s rules first.

Rules from the source

  • JPG or JPEG, 10 to 200 KB, colour or black and white.
  • About 80 percent of the image should be your face, ears included, no mask.
  • Photo must be recent: taken after 1 January 2026 for the 2026 exam.
  • Signature is separate: JPG or JPEG, 10 to 100 KB.

Expression, lighting and how recent the photo is cannot be measured from a picture, so check them yourself.

Can you make it at home?

Yes. The application also asks for a live photo taken with your webcam or phone, so an uploaded file is not the only photo.

PortraitPass frames the photo against the head and eye lines above and exports a single photo or a print sheet, with the measurements shown so you can check them yourself.
